What to Expect

What is Counseling?

Counseling provides an unbiased, warm, and accepting environment for people of all ages who are experiencing difficulties in their relationships, emotional struggles, and/or life changes or transitions. Counseling provides a warm and accepting atmosphere for people to explore their strengths and learn how to cope with life’s problems.

How do I chose a counselor?

You may click on our Counselors section to read about each of our counselors. This page provides a description of the counselor’s training and specialty areas. This page also gives you the option of contacting that counselor with any questions you may have. Notice we have counselors in convenient locations throughout the Kansas City Metro area, so you are likely to find one in your area.  Once you find a counselor that you feel like is a fit for you, follow the instructions on that counselor’s page for how to schedule with that specific counselor.  If you have further questions, or would like assistance in choosing a counselor, you may call the mainline and we will help you find the right counselor.

How do I know if I need counseling?

If you are thinking through things in your life and you think it would be helpful to have another person involved in that thought process or you just would rather not consider those things by yourself, counseling is a great option. Counseling is helpful for a broad spectrum of situations, including basic life changes and more critical relational, emotional, psychological, and spiritual crisis. Your first visit to a counselors does not mandate you to a second appointment. If you wonder if counseling is the best option for you, make an appointment and see if the experience feels supportive and helpful.

What will happen during a visit?

Your first visit to a counselor is an opportunity to see if that counselor feels like a fit for you.  You may want to bring a list of questions you have for the counselor. It is important that you feel safe and comfortable in the counseling relationship.  You should experience dignity and care throughout the process.

How long does a session last?

Most sessions are 45 minutes to 50 minutes.  The counselor utilizes the last 15 minutes of each hour to plan and track progress of care.  The therapist uses this time to skillfully assess the process to be sure you are receiving the highest benefit.

What is the cost for counseling?

All of our counselors utilize an income-based fee scale. Each counselors has a different minimum and maximum fee which are clearly explained on each counselor’s information page. If you have a question about the fees, you may contact the therapist directly.

Do you take insurance?

Our counselors indicate on their information page whether or not they take insurance. Some counselors choose not to process in-network insurance because of the restrictions that may apply to your care, as a result of insurance company requirements.

All of our counselors can provide a billable medical receipt for you to submit as an out-of-network provider, if you choose to utilize insurance. There are some important facts to know about mental health insurance:

  1. Insurance companies require a diagnosis to pay for services. Many counseling issues do not warrant a full mental health diagnosis. For example, insurance companies rarely cover couples or marriage counseling. If you are in counseling because of a difficult life issue, you may not meet criteria for a diagnosis.
  2. Insurance companies often determine the type of treatment and number of session that will be allowed. If you are more comfortable with a different type of treatment or different pace for sessions, the insurance company will not continue to cover the sessions.
  3. If insurance pays for treatment, the insurance company may view all therapy notes at anytime. Your personal information becomes a permanent record that can be viewed by auditors.

We do our best to provide affordable care options so that you can make an informed choice.
